Although this book discusses Urban Spaces as they were and how they developed till the 1980's, I still think it is relevant today as it discusses basic issues on what makes a successful Urban Space. Last year I wrote a short post about plazas (Public plazas part one: people sit where there are places to sit), referencing the classic book The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces by the late William H. The Architecture Foundation are screening "The social life of small urban places" by William H. Whyte, based on his equally enjoyable book published in 1980. 'The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces' is a wonderful film by William H. The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces. Quite related to what we are doing as a unit. He wrote many books on the subject as well as created the following video on the social life of small urban spaces. The title says “small urban spaces”, but notice how wide the sidewalks are, the fact that there is a plaza, a water feature, places to sit as well as to stand. The methodology of the book is documentary, but it carries with it an agenda and exhortation for the enrichment of the spaces themselves. After writing a book about corporate culture, he started to research human behavior in urban settings.
